On the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart

French reads: Sacred Heart of Jesus, I have trust in you.

Recently, Alisa left a comment, saying that she is going to have the Enthronment of the Sacred Heart in her home.

I have to say, I’m so thrilled. It is such a wonderful thing to make the Sacred Heart head of the household.

So, what is the Enthronment? Simply put, it is a ritual of prayers and blessings, celebrated by a priest, to establish the social reign of the Sacred Heart in the home.

The ceremony is held within the home, where the family publicly acknowledges the Sacred Heart of Jesus as King and Master. Hence, the head of the family places an image or statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in a central position within the home, as if on a throne.

Together the family members consecrate themselves to the Sacred Heart. There is a prayer for the renewal of the consecration to be said each night with the family prayers.

Thus, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is ‘Enthroned’!

So how did the ceremony come to be?

On August 24th 1685, Saint Margaret Mary wrote these words about the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the understanding of which had been given her through special graces she had received. She wrote:

He takes great pleasure in being honoured by His creatures. He … seemed to promise …“that all those who are devoted to this Sacred Heart will never perish and that, since He is the source of all blessings, He will shower them in abundance on every place where an image of this loving heart shall be exposed to be loved and honoured.

By this means He will reunite broken families and assist and protect those in any necessity.”

It is these words that have formed the foundation of the Enthronment ceremony, developed by the Peruvian Priest, Father Mateo Crawley-Boevey (1875-1960).

After a miraculous cure at Paray-le-Monial, whilst praying in the chapel of the Apparitions of the Sacred Heart to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, he consecrated his life to the mission of spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart.

He was inspired to do this through the family, the centre of Christian social life and that through the family, the social reign of Jesus Christ would naturally spread.

Over the years, Roger and I have moved around so much, living with other people, staying in temporary places, that it has been incredible to have our own home for the last year.

It has also been incredible because we were able, earlier in the year to have a priest visit us and celebrate the Enthronment of the Sacred Heart in our home.

The day was special. We had a private Mass in our church, at the Sacred Heart altar, the intentions of which were for the Enthronment itself, which was carried out in Latin.

We then went back to our home, for the ritual itself, where first of all, the priest blessed our home.

Following the Litany of the Sacred Heart and many prayers, the priest blessed a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was then placed by Roger in His special Kingly position. The ritual also included a consecration to the Immaculate Heart of our Lady and the blessing of Her statue and my placing Her as Queen of our home.

The ceremony was very special. As the Priest, as mediator, blessed our home and our statues and led us through the prayers, it was as through we were showered with graces.

Yet, whilst the ceremony was special itself, the graces we have received since have seemed remarkable.

It is not simply that this, or that has happened, even though they have. It is as if there is a quality of grace that has entered our home that was not there before the Enthronment.

It is as though whatever we do, Our Lord, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is with us in the home in a new and special way.

I highly recommend that if you have not had your home consecrated to the Sacred Heart, that you arrange for a priest to come and celebrate the ceremony. You may be surprised at how much it changes your life.

Cor Jesu Rex, Miserere nobis.
